The City of Newport welcomes Billie Bechtel as the new Sports Coordinator for the Newport Recreation Center.
Originally from San Diego, California, Bechtel moved to Newport for the position. “Before going through the employment process for the city, I had actually never visited Oregon!” Bechtel said. “I like how you’re in close proximity to diverse landscapes. Whether you want to go to the beach, or hike through a forest, it is all just minutes away. That is probably the main thing that attracted me here.”
Bechtel earned a B.S. in Criminal Justice, with a minor in Psychology from California State University, Sacramento. From 2017-2021, he was the Sports Program Manager for Naval Base San Diego. He directed and managed sports leagues and special events for over 30,000 Sailors and their families.
He added he was the kicker on his high school and college football team, and would train with NFL kicker John Carney.
First and foremost, Bechtel said his role as a city employee is public service. “To me, that means providing the best service possible to every patron, no matter the circumstance,” he said. “That is a standard I bring to work every day, and something I think every government employee should strive for.”
Some of his duties include directing sports leagues for adults and children, hosting summer camps, and planning and executing special events. In short, he has some part in anything sports related that the city is doing.
“My absolute favorite part about this position is just facilitating sports events and leagues,” he said. “I have always viewed sports as one of the best ways to bring people together. Having played sports all my life, it never ceases to amaze me how easily friendships are created through them.”
Bechtel explained the most challenging aspect of Parks and Recreation is the budget.
“Coming from Naval Base San Diego, where you have a massive federal budget, you could always afford to get the absolute best of everything,” he said. “For a city, it’s a much smaller budget. It’s difficult because in the time I’ve been here, I know just how welcoming, friendly, and prideful the citizens of Newport are. I want the absolute best for this city, not just in terms of service, but also facilities and materials.”
