Newport Police Officers were tipped off that an Oregon State Police Trooper was in pursuit of a vehicle speeding south on Highway 101, in the Agate Beach area, just north of Newport.
The OSP officer alerted Newport Police that the vehicle ahead of him was failing to yield to emergency lights and siren. The vehicle entered Newport and Newport Police joined the chase.
The suspect, later identified as 47-year-old James Nottingham, refused to pull over. The pursuit continued – Nottingham failing to yield to vehicles and pedestrians. He turned off of Highway 101 east onto NE 5th Street in an effort to elude the officers behind him. But they kept him in sight.
Eventually Nottingham blew a stop sign damaging a car that was crossing the intersection. Nottingham’s vehicle was also damaged but he still continued driving west on NE 11th Street. Newport Police eventually boxed him in and took him into custody. It was later discovered Nottingham was driving a stolen car.
The driver of the other vehicle was transported to Samaritan Pacific Communities Hospital while Nottingham was taken to the Lincoln County Jail on the following charges:
Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle-Felony, Hit and Run Vehicle Injury-Felony, Criminal Mischief- Felony, Eluding police-Felony, Reckless Endangering-Felony among other criminal charges.
