World Rhythm returns to the Lincoln County Fair on Friday
The exceptionally diverse live music roster on the Main Stage of the Lincoln County Fair is made up entirely of Lincoln County based acts, this year, and features the return of the Newport/Oregon Coast Community Drum Circle’s popular and eclectic “World Music Extravaganza” stage show on Friday [July 2] from 1:00 to 2:30 p.m.
The show has been a staple of the fair’s musical line-up for more than a decade. This year’s show again features an expanded configuration of Newport’s Thunder & Lightness World Beat Ensemble, with Osage Nation tribal member Terry Filer on the Native American flutes, World Beat Percussionist Chandler Davis, and Featured Special Guest West African Master Drummer Abdoulaye Thioub, from Newport and Senegal.
The group’s multicultural traditional and indigenous rhythm and song format includes African, Latin American, Middle Eastern, and many other traditional genres played on authentic wooden hand drums, log drums, and wooden flutes. This year’s ensemble also includes regular Thunder & Lightness percussionist Sandra Surber and well-known local Special Guest drummers Skip Floraday and Rodney Turner.
Later in the day, on Friday at 4:00 p.m. – which is also Senior Citizens Day this year –the fair will present a brand new three-hour “Fiesta Latina” event with a Mariachi band, food, and dancing on the concrete apron in front of the Main Stage.
The Fair continues through Sunday with music each day by such prominent and diverse local musical performers as the June Rushing Band, jazz guitarist Greg Ernst, Past Forward, Saundra Perrin, Guilty Tendencies, and the Steve Cook/Chris Colt Duo.
Davis and other members of the Thunder & Lightness Ensemble will also be performing Saturday [July 3] at 10 a.m. at Waldport Beachcomber Days, on the new Main Stage on NW John St. (across from the Moose Lodge) along with other prominent local bands.
Admission and all music is free at both events.
