The pandemic changed a lot about college – forcing classes that had always been taught in-person, in classrooms, to venture into new online formats. It also changed a lot of college plans. Many students looked at the prospect of switching to online-only study and opted to take a year off. Others, who had left school years before but considered returning to complete that elusive degree or secure better job prospects, decided not to do so if it meant doing it in an online-only environment. Still other students slogged it out, combating poor Internet service, a lack of adequate computers, disruptions caused by reduced childcare availability, and myriad other challenges along the way.
Given all that our students have gone through in the past year, Oregon Coast Community College is excited to announce that it is planning a return to campus for the Fall 2021 term, with a robust lineup of in-person classwork – and, this will be more than just another “normal” year. This year brings a variety of new courses, including courses in chemistry, biology, and general sciences, as well as computer science and much more. “We are pleased about the return to campus and impressed by the flexibility of our Facilities & Safety team as they prepare a safe, welcoming environment in our buildings for our students,” said Dr. Andres Oroz, OCCC’s Vice President of Student Affairs. “We’ll also see a number of courses offered in online or hybrid formats, so that students who wish to participate from home due to work schedules or other concerns can do so.”
To help students decide whether now is the time to return to OCCC, the College is hosting an in-person open house event on Thursday, June 17 at its Central County Campus, at 400 SE College Way in Newport. The event will be held twice on the same day, to spread out attendance and adhere to social-distancing guidelines, from 2p.m. to 4 p.m. and again from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Attendees will get to know Oregon Coast Community College while they learn about its academic programs and career & technical education offerings. They will discover how much they can save by completing the first two years of their four-year degree here at the coast. They can learn about the college’s special academic programs, including how they can earn a Teaching degree and secure a career with the Lincoln County School District. Attendees will also learn more about OCCC’s many other specialty programs, from Early Childhood Education to Business, and from Computer Science to Nursing – along with many others. There will also be campus tours, the chance to meet and speak with current OCCC students, talk with faculty and staff, learn about how they can pay for college with the help of the College’s Financial Aid team, and more. Plus, for those interested in getting a head start, there will be one-on-one help with applications and registrations, and assistance in all areas of the event in Spanish available on request.
There is a pre-registration form available at oregoncoast.edu/visit. Pre-registration will help the College manage attendance and maintain safe social-distancing requirements. Arriving without pre-registration may result in delays waiting for an opportunity to enter.
