I have seen a tremendous growth in short term rentals just in the past couple of years. We have one on our street in South Beach off 143rd Street that’s not registered as an STR but has been renting short term to people from all over the country over this past year. No 24 hour sign in front. No way to know that it’s a short term rental except from cars from Tennessee, Washington, Texas, etc., all short term – a few weeks or less. It seems to me with a new hotel coming into town and the hotels and motels that we have that are never full, if we got rid of half of the short term rentals in neighborhoods that our restaurants would have so much more business and more businesses would come in to accommodate those staying in our hotels. I agree with the traffic problems, noise and the cars that are lined up in front of these homes along 101 that I pass every time coming into town – sometimes six cars in the driveway for a three bedroom home on a septic on the ocean side. That’s a recipe for disaster as it happens over and over and over again. We need to put this to a community or county-wide vote so that those who reside in these neighborhoods have a say! Here’s a duplex, an old one in the Nye Beach area that used to house working families that is now a short term rental this just happened in the last year. No wonder we can’t have affordable housing for people who live and work here. Enough !
