Every month, Toledo showcases the arts during First Weekend. This event on the first weekend of every month is an opportunity for gallery goers to talk to local artists and connect on a personal level with their work. Toledo’s First Weekend will be partnering with ART Toledo in their first annual event series “Art, Oysters and Brews,” a celebration of our coastal community with local musicians, brewery tastings, and art. “Art, Oysters and Brews” will be occurring on June 5th from Noon to 5PM. Featured at the Yaquina River Museum of Art for First Weekend June will be the continuation of the new exhibition “Additions to the Permanent Collection” which displays fourteen paintings by twelve artists; ten new or reframed for first time viewing. Among the works shown, Don Prechtel’s painting “Fishing Boat” comes from his time living in Newport Oregon, although the body of his work is about America’s western heritage. This fine oil painting was donated by the artist. The “Additions to the Permanent Collection” exhibit is proudly sponsored by Georgia-Pacific and Michael Gibbons’ Signature Gallery. The Museum will be hosting a First Weekend Book Sale for the month of June, all art books will be 50% off on June 5th and 6th . The Yaquina River Museum of Art, located at 151 NE Alder Street, will be open from Noon-4PM on Friday, Saturday and Sunday and during First Weekends. Across the street at Michael Gibbons’ Signature Gallery, a special spotlight will be on “View in Schreiner’s Gardens” an iconic Gibbons painting featuring award-winning irises at Schreiner’s Iris Gardens. The late artist was well known for his paintings of unique gardens from around the state of Oregon, such as Schreiner’s Iris Gardens, the Portland Rose Garden, and the 80-acre Oregon Garden. Michael Gibbons’ ability to capture the found beauty of nature established him as one of the State’s most recognized artists. Michael Gibbons’ Signature Gallery is located at 140 NE Alder Street and will be open both days from Noon-4PM. Over on Graham Street, Ivan Kelly Studio & Gallery will be displaying “Morning Walk On The Dunes,” a coastal landscape depicting a fair summer morning. Ivan Kelly painted the piece on location at Yaquina State Park. Kelly’s work en plein air has been featured widely, along with his maritime paintings, and big game pieces. Ivan Kelly Studio & Gallery, located at 207 E Graham Street, will be open Saturday from 11AM-5PM and Sunday from Noon-5PM.
On Main Street, Crow’s Nest Gallery & Studio will be showcasing the works of fifteen artists. Janet Runger, the founder of Crow’s Nest, will be featuring her Assemblage Art using found objects. Val Bolen will be displaying her tile and ceramic art; Alice Haga will be showing her fused glass works; Paula Teplitz, primarily a ceramic and a mixed media artist, will be displaying her work such as her sculptural jellyfish mobiles; Jeff Gibford is a photographer who digitally manipulates his photography; and Tish Epperson will be displaying her vivid watercolor work. Crow’s Nest Gallery & Studio is now located at 305 N. Main Street in Toledo. Crow’s Nest will be open from 10AM to 5PM Friday through Sunday.
