Oregon Senators Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley getting internet service to low income Americans

Over the past year, fast, reliable internet has kept many American families connected to school, work and loved ones. But the past year has also laid bare how many families lack reliable broadband access. Low-income and rural Oregonians, many of whom are Oregonians of color, are being left behind in the digital divide.
Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, I’ve been pushing federal agencies to help families cover the high cost of broadband.
And I’m happy to say that starting today, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is opening up applications for its Emergency Broadband Benefit (EBB) program to help households cover the cost of this critical service.
We fought tooth and nail to get this program off the ground because I believe every American from Portland, Oregon to Portland, Maine should have access to affordable, high-quality broadband, no matter their zip code or their income.
