Mayor to Speak at Nye Neighbors Meeting
Passcode: Nye (capitalize N)
“The idea of creating a Neighborhood Association began last year when a group of neighbors decided to go to the beach and pick up litter, used fireworks, and other items the day after the Fourth of July,” said Jan Kaplan, chair of the committee working on formally establishing the organization.
Last fall the committee held regular meetings and decided to seek standing with the city to represent the Nye District which is bordered by SW 2nd Street through NW 12th Street from the ocean to Hurbert Street. The group established draft bylaws, a mission statement, and an expanding mailing list of interested citizens. NNA has held two general meetings on Zoom. It is conducting a survey of Nye residents, property owners, and business owners to find what activities and interests are desired and to find people willing to work on these. The brief survey is online at: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/YX7XBDV
NNA is a group of Nye Beach citizens working to improve and enhance the quality of life in the Nye Beach District community by fostering neighborhood pride and promoting community awareness. The Association is dedicated to supporting and promoting a positive quality of life in the neighborhood.
Goals include sponsoring social events, educating neighbors on community and historical issues, addressing safety concerns, supporting and planning for clean-up and beautification efforts, and advocating on behalf of the neighborhood.
Newport adopted a policy for recognizing Neighborhood Associations in October 2018, encouraging the formation of Neighborhood Associations and including them in city planning processes. NNA is the first organization seeking standing under this policy.
“We need to increase members and work to insure we represent the diverse people and needs of our neighborhood,” said Cathey Briggs, a member of the organizing committee.
NNA will be electing a Board of Directors and pursuing non-profit status later this spring. Under the leadership of committee member, Robert Emond, a website is under construction and will be launched in April. There are no dues or fees. Association activities are open to all. Voting rights are limited to those who live in, own property or own businesses within the Nye Beach District.
To join the meeting on April 1 or join the mailing list, please send contact information: name, e-mail, phone, address and also include if you are a Nye Beach resident, property owner or business owner, or an interested citizen-at-large, to email@example.com
