An engineering firm has stepped in to help the Newport City Council replace the Big Creek Dam complex on the east side of town. It’s a very complicated set of duties that are expected from the firm as well as the city.
The dams are quite old and there is speculation that both dams are nearing the end of their life span. The city is lobbying the Congress very heavily so they can replace the dams before they fail – with catastrophic results. The city council confirmed with the firm that a preliminary assessment of the condition of the dams can be accurately determined through a $4 Million federally funded investigation – that is if the Congress will come up with the money.
Replacing the dams, or building a new single dam, is very much top-of-mind with the firm and the city. We’ll see how this very expensive project plays out over the next five to ten years.
