The Newport City Council pushed ahead this week to expand electric vehicle charging stations at strategic locations around Newport. The council and many area residents and businesspersons have been waiting quite a while to get approval to install them.
Newport City Councilors this week began seeking permission to expand the number of electric car chargers. State government officials appear to be quite receptive to the idea. The chargers are likely to be in very visible locations. There’s a charging station already behind Newport City Hall as well as at The Hallmark, Walmart, Power Chevrolet and others with more to come. The city council agreed that future developments around town with 50 or more parking spaces shall be required to put in electrical conduit so if electric cars become more common someday, the conduit will be already in the ground and ready to receive wiring for electric car charging.
