44th Annual Newport Seafood & Wine Festival

Stone Griffon Vineyard Tempranillo

Newport, Ore. – A lean, but impressive for its quality, 35th Annual Commercial Wine Competition took place this weekend as part of the 44th Annual Newport Seafood & Wine Festival scheduled this year in a virtual and “to go” format for February 26 and 27.

The experienced panel of judges was impressed by the Tempranillo flight which upstaged the signature red wine grape of Oregon, Pinot noir. The new elegance of grapes grown in Southern Oregon and Eastern Washington showed Tempranillo, grape of the mother land of Spain, very well. Winning a Gold Medal and the Joseph H. Swafford Best-of-Show Award was Stone Griffon Winery’s 2016 Estate Reserve Tempranillo. This Carlton, Oregon, winery’s owner-winemaker Terry McIntyre also took a Gold for his 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon.

Two other Gold Medals went to Oregon Tempranillos from the 2016 vintage: Jacksonville’s Valley View Vineyards and the Hillsboro winery D’Anu. D’Anu took home a total of three Golds adding a 2016 Sangiovese and 2019 Syrah. Roseberg’s Season Cellars won a pair of Gold Medals with a 2016 Malbec and a2017 Viognier. A full list of medal winners is available at www.seafoodandwine.com.

The Newport Chamber of Commerce wishes to thank the wineries who participated, knowing there would be no exposure to the thousands of visitors under a giant tent by the ocean this year. Each winery participating enhances the Northwest wine industry and it is festivals such as Newport’s that give new and upcoming wineries exposure and a means to gain entry into the marketplace.

The 44th Annual Newport Seafood & Wine Festival is presented by Chinook Winds Casino Resort and is produced by the Greater Newport Chamber of Commerce. Several medal winning wines and the Best in Show winner are available to add to “to go” baskets, offered for pickup from the Newport Chamber of Commerce. Baskets include local seafood, two choices of wine, Rogue beer and other goodies, and must be ordered by Monday, February 15 and picked up in Newport February 26-28. To go baskets and a virtual festival experience are available at www.seafoodandwine.com.
