Newport Police had their hands full leading into the Christmas period. Their first encounter with what turned out to be a lawbreaker and drug runner was a man driving a car that was immediately pulled over. Newport Police K-9 sniffed the man’s car and immediately indicated that there were illegal drugs inside. And sure enough Newport Officers discovered a large quantity of heroin and methamphetamine and immediately arrested Wiley Pierce who was immediately taken to jail on charges of selling and delivering meth and heroin along the Oregon Coast. There was also a felony warrant out for Pierce’s arrest.
In another incident it seems that an especially alert Newport Police Officer spotted a man dressed up in a Santa Claus suit walking along Highway 101. But he quickly saw that the man in the suit was carrying a hand-gun. When confronted about the gun Jeffrey Stamps, 25, wearing the Santa suit, began struggling with the one of the officers. One officer pulled out a taser but the thick Santa suit shielded Stamps somewhat. Other officers took Stamps down and shortly thereafter hauled him off to the county jail where he was charged with assault on a peace officer, menacing, resisting, interfering with police and disorderly conduct.
During the scuffle with police, one officer suffered a small wound which was treated at a local hospital.
