Who is Susan Reese and who is the “insider”?
On January 17th, Governor Brown appointed Marcia Buckley to Judge Sanders’ vacant seat, against the recommendation of every elected judge in Lincoln County, including Judge Sanders. Susan Reese wrote a letter last week asking you to ignore the opinions of these “courthouse insiders” and convince you that the appointment was the result of careful deliberation of a “diverse committee.” What she failed to disclose was that she, a personal friend of Marcia Buckley, was the only resident of Lincoln County on the “diverse committee.”
To properly evaluate Ms. Reese’s letter, consider the following:
Ms. Reese is a criminal defense attorney specializing in child sex abuse defense. https://www.ocdla.org/susan-elizabeth-reese/. Amanda Benjamin has specialized in the prosecution of child sexual abuse.
During the appointment process for Judge Sanders’ vacant seat, Ms. Reese wrote a letter asking Governor Brown to “favor us” by appointing Buckley. She disclosed she and Ms. Buckley were currently working together but failed to disclose they were close friends. https://drive.google.com/open?id=1xZNIwzwcIEkaDwxAnPpFN9a9w-GS6W8s Pg 128 After writing this letter, Ms. Reese sat as the only Lincoln County resident on the interview panel despite her personal connections to Marcia Buckley.
While these applications for appointment were pending, Susan Reese received an award for her work as a sex abuse defense attorney. Though not a criminal defense attorney, Buckley attended the event to honor her friend. “https://www.facebook.com/OregonCriminalDefenseLawyersAssociation/photos/a.2763513667049676/2763514893716220. Speaking in tribute to Susan [were] her good friends Marcia Buckley…” https://ocdla.force.com/OcdlaEvent?id=a230a000009GZPWAA4.
Before you follow Ms. Reese’s advice, please consider the facts and determine for yourself who was the “insider” in this process. I will be voting for Amanda Benjamin for Judge.
