Newport Symphony Orchestra’s New Board President
The Newport Symphony announces their new Board President. First, a special thank you to Interim President John Lavrakas for his many years of service in a leadership role as president and executive director with the symphony. John will continue as a member of the board as Immediate Past President and Chair of the Finance Committee.
It is with great pleasure to inform you that Dr. Karen Fischer Gray is the new President of the Newport Symphony Orchestra Board of Directors. Dr. Gray is the Lincoln County School District Superintendent and has been an educator for 41 years, the last 17 as a Superintendent. She was the Oregon Superintendent of the Year in 2018.
Having been a Superintendent for many years, she brings a wide variety of capabilities and deep knowledge about what is required by an organization to progress into the future. That as well as her 18 years of experience as a teacher will provide the NSO with understanding regarding how to continue building its Youth Programming for Newport. Her dream is to start a Youth Symphony in Lincoln County.
Another key to Dr. Gray’s leadership for an orchestra is that she was a musician for much of her life. Karen was an accomplished violinist and pianist and played second chair for the Cal State Fullerton Orchestra for a good number of years. We are very happy to have a strategic and musical person not only as a member of the Newport Symphony Orchestra Board, but now as the leader of the Board.
