Saturday evening, Lincoln City Police responded to a motor vehicle crash in the 2700 block of north Highway 101. The crash involved a white Ford van and a small Chevrolet Aveo. As a result of the impact, the driver of the Aveo, 21-year-old Julia Munson of Salem was transported by air ambulance to a Portland hospital. She later died from her injuries.
Police say the van had been traveling northbound on Highway 101 when it crossed over into the southbound lanes where it sideswiped a Honda sedan. The van continued traveling northbound in the southbound lane where it collided head on with the Chevrolet Aveo.
The driver of the van, identified as 27-year-old Alan Gates of Lincoln City, sustained minor injuries and was taken to Samaritan North Lincoln Hospital. After being treated for his injuries, Gates was arrested and transported to the Lincoln County Jail where he was charged with Manslaughter, Drunk Driving, Reckless Driving, Reckless Endangering, Driving While Suspended and Driving Uninsured.
The investigation of the crash continues and the Lincoln County District Attorney’s Office is reviewing the case for additional or revised violations that could be charged against Gates.
