An update from Lincoln County Schools

Dear Lincoln County School Families,

  1. Congratulations are in order for Waldport High! FNRL (Future Natural Resource Leaders) did a virtual state competition the first week of May. Waldport had 14 participants and 9 of them placed. This resulted in 56 points for Waldport with second place going to Tillamook HS (36 points) followed by Clatskanie with 34 points for 3rd place. GO IRISH!

  2. More Congratulations: Brian Hanna a teacher from Newport High is the LBL Regional Teacher of the Year!!! Now he is in line to compete to become the Oregon Teacher of the Year. We appreciate Brian and wish him the best of luck!

  3. And More Congratulations: The Toledo Jr./Sr. High Boomers won the State Basketball Championship this year and recently they were recognized for their high Grade Point Averages so they are truly athletic scholars!! Their coach Eddie Townsend was recognized as Coach of the Year! Student Conner Merchant was named Player of the Year, Mason McAlpine was named 1st Team All State.

  4. 2020-2021 Student Transportation Update Summary

The bus routes and stops have been reconfigured for efficiency improvements. The following recommendations have been implemented for the upcoming year 20-21:

  •  Maximum two pickup sites, two drop off sites, two bus changes per student per week.

  • Transportation changes must be submitted in writing to school offices no later than 11:00 AM – M-F.

  • Online registration will route bus service to and from home, if other bus service is required guardians must visit school site registration.

  • Bus service not used for 10 or more consecutive school days will be removed, guardians may contact the school office for reinstatement if needed.

If you have questions about these changes please contact your principal or the superintendent. More information about this to follow June 1 but we needed to make sure to get this information out to you as soon as possible. Changes are needed in order to create the BEST bus service for our kids and families we possibly can.

  1. Graduation Events planned and Last Day of School.  June 5th is the last day of school for all students. June 6th there will be modified Graduation and Senior Awards Events for each high school. PLEASE check with your high schools for details. Every event has been double and triple checked for safety using ODE and OHA guidelines. Our plans have gone to LC Public Health for review. This does not mean that an in person ceremony will not happen. We just don’t know when so the schools wanted/needed to do something in the meantime. We are honoring our Seniors! The graduation events are planned for the same times that they would have happened:

Waldport: June 5  – 6:30p.m.

Taft: June 6 – 11:20 a.m.

Toledo: June 6 – 2:00 p.m.

Newport: June 6 – 6:00 p.m

  1. Meals:Please make sure to get your meals!! We recently got a gift of 6000 wrapped toothbrushes and they are going to be given out in the meals. This is an awesome gift! Meals go until June 9th and then will start back up for summer meals after that. More information to come.

  2. Budget: The District Budget passed unanimously last Thursday night May 14. There is MUCH uncertainty about what the real state revenue numbers will be because of the loss of so many jobs and so many taxes that normally pay for education in Oregon. We will keep you posted about this but I am not expecting it to be a rosy picture. Thanks to the School Board and Budget Committee for their work.

  3. Instructional News: For Elementary you will not be receiving a paper packet next week because this week’s packet includes both week’s work. Secondary?

  4. Community Newsletter is now also available in Spanish on our website. Please, check out the nice images and stories. https://lincoln.k12.or.us/media/2020/05/compass-news-spring-2020-spanish.pdf

That’s the news for this week! Everyone please stay safe and be healthy. We love and care about all of you and want you to be well and healthy!

Sincerely,

Karen Gray, Superintendent
