Lincoln County Commissioners and City Councilors vote to extend Declaration of Emergency until May 31stDuring a lengthy meeting of many members of Lincoln County City Councils, as well as the Lincoln County Board of Commissioners they decided that the current Covid-19 Virus Declaration of an Emergency will be extended to the end of May. AT LEAST to the end of May.
The gathering of city councilors and commissioners concurred that there is a lot of confusion and uncertainty caused by the Corona Virus with many lives threatened in the near and long-term. Many residents and government officials believe that because the rate of virus infection has flattened out IN OUR AREA, it warrants opening up SOME businesses and SOME recreational opportunities, not to mention traveling about the country. But national disease experts remain adamant that there will be a vicious viral “re-eruption” this fall when the virus will again raise its head and go after many more Americans who the virus missed during the first half of 2020. Keeping Americans safe this fall and winter will be critical. BUT! a vaccine is said to be AT LEAST a year away. Until then, wash your hands until your hands beg for mercy, wear a mask while in public, maintain at least a six foot space between you and other people, disinfect every surface in your home that is within easy reach, especially door knobs, counter-tops and TV remote controls. And remember – hands even NEAR eyes, nose, mouth or ears are dangerous – if not deadly.
There was also frustration among Lincoln County leaders that the U.S. Government has been slow to even begin gathering test kits for detecting the virus – where it is and who’s got it – especially those who don’t even know they’ve got it. However, the number of testing supplies is improving – but not real fast. It’s only by determining the virus’ human-to-human pathways can virus chasers track down where it’s been and where it’s going – and whether the Autumn “echo” of the virus will rear its deadly head. But those gathered today in Lincoln County seemed convinced that the momentum in the war against the Covid-19 is starting to turn around. They admit it’s not a game-changer….YET.
So, as one medical expert said, “It’s the beginning of the beginning of a year-long battle. Again, there will be efforts by some local governments to allow the re-opening of certain critical businesses – even those that aren’t so critical. But each community will have “some say” in how all that unfolds.
But remember – if they don’t have a PhD in disease assessment – they don’t have the final word. Only information that comes from knowledgeable doctors should be trusted. Self-appointed “experts” without medical school degrees harm the discussions and literally threaten lives. This is life vs. death for many thousands of people.
As for the nation’s economy, experts say it’s going to be up to the U.S. Government to make sure there’s food on the table, gas in the car and health care at the ready. And that will require continued, nearly unlimited funding, to ensure the United States of America climbs back up the ladder to “the good life.” We will also have to be far better prepared if a future killer virus raises its head in a Chinese open-air food market thereby launching another world-wide pandemic.
It’s not going to be an easy year. Some areas of the country will be allowed to open-up far ahead of others because biological, economic and climate conditions vary. But to our advantage, it’s our federal government that has the power and the obligation to print reasonable amounts of money to award to all Americans whose very lives depend on a just outcome – keeping in mind that these viruses come around several times a century – so next time we MUST BE PREPARED TO JUMP ON THE NEXT VIRUS SO IT DOESN’T SPREAD SUCH DESTRUCTION AND DEATH.
We know we must do better. We can do better. We will do better at stopping the spread of such deadly viruses early enough to put them all to an early grave. Who’s more intelligent – a morphing microscopic virus or the human race? With our grasp of science and love of life and each other, the mission will be easier than we think.
We just have to do it.
