Letter to the editor
I am pleased to write this letter of support to reelect Claire Hall for County Commissioner. When I returned to Lincoln County 10 years ago, I kept hearing about this commissioner, Claire Hall, who was dedicated to increasing housing for folks here on the coast. I had just completed a PhD in community development with an emphasis on poverty reduction and housing. Folks kept referring me to Claire as someone I should know and work with.
I first met Claire at a Homeless Connect event which she spearheaded. And in the next years, I became more and more impressed with this commissioner. Her values of caring for people, her honesty and dedication to doing the best job she could by representing our needs both in the county, but also in the state has brought us desperately needed resources. Her success in increasing housing in Lincoln County is a direct result of her years of service, being trusted in Salem, and having a reputation as a go-getter.
This type of success doesn’t happen overnight. It takes years to be known as an honest broker, to get to know the players, and to develop a track record with funders and others. Claire has done just that! I see her years of exemplary service as a great benefit to Lincoln County, and it only makes sense to re-elect Claire so she can continue to bring much needed resources to our county.
This is what I would have written a month ago. Today, my concerns are much more acute. During the past few weeks I watched Claire step up and provided much-needed leadership as Lincoln County, as the US grappled with the COVID-19 virus. At a time when we were confused and apprehensive about what actions to take to stay safe, Claire was right there on social media with updates on the number of cases in Lincoln County, giving us much needed information on social distancing (before most of us had even heard of the term), and working with city leaders on limiting visitors to our county.
Claire has taken some heat for her directives, however. The very fact that the virus has not taken over our town is testament of the efficacy of Claire’s and her colleagues’ actions. Claire continues to protect Lincoln County residents from out of town visitors and is doing everything possible to provide sound and trustworthy leadership.
We need her vast experience with county and state government to help us get through this crisis. We do not have the luxury of waiting for a new, untrained and inexperienced person to learn how to do Claire’s job. Residents are struggling to stay well, pay their rent, and feed their families. We need Claire’s experience, gravitas, and commitment to keep us safe and to help rebuild our future. We must re-elect Claire Hall for County Commissioner next month. Our future depends on her leadership. Please join me in voting for Claire Hall.
