Update April 15
Dear Lincoln County School District Family,
I hope that everyone is finding a way to stay positive and uplifted. It is going to take giant reserves of strength and resilience to keep going and doing the best for our students, staff and families. Our deep love and abiding care for our students will keep us committed and energized as we march forward together.
The Lincoln County School District (LCSD) is determining how to issue athletic refunds due to the Oregon School Athletic Association cancelling all spring season events. We may have other refunds as well. More information about these refunds will be announced soon.
This is Budget Season for all Oregon school districts. LCSD will hold its first Budget Committee Meeting Thursday, May 14 and will be held at Newport High School for the members of the Committee and by Zoom for everyone else. Members of the Budget Committee may also decide to meet using Zoom. There are many aspects of the State School Fund which supports local school districts. The fund also includes the Student Investment Account. Your patience is appreciated as we re-configure our school budgets. More on this later.
On April 20th the elementary program begins. DLFA is a digital computer-and-video based approach to education. However, not all students have these high tech tools. But they will be able to access instructional materials with books, paper and pencils. We know that the majority of the educational approach needs to be high-tech. Every student, and how they learn, needs to be examined and met in the best way possible. PLEASE see our website for details. Click here.
Communication with Parents/Guardians/Families has required a huge effort on the part of our teachers, support staff, principals and vice principals. Please be aware we may be calling you several times a day and that we may be providing a lot of information to you. Please know that we’re not trying to overwhelm you! We are trying to let you know that we care, we want to provide meals and education to your children and that we want to be good partners with you during these unusual circumstances. Just do what you can do. Pace yourself.
Chromebooks have been given to more than 1500 students. If a family has more than 3 children grades K-8, you can request an additional chromebook. Just follow the process we have advertised on our website and we will arrange to get it to you.
Meals are still going out to about half of all LCSD students, roughly 3000 boxed meals per day. We are able to provide THREE meals a day in one box. We’re being assisted by the Newport Boosters, TLC Credit Union, T Mobile and more. We will serve meals every day for students until summer. We are planning to work out what happens after the school year ends.
Graduation Ceremonies are planned though we haven’t set a date, time or place when it will happen. As soon as the stay-at-home order is lifted, we will be hosting graduation ceremonies in each of our 4 areas. Again, stay tuned.
Well, that’s all for today.
PLEASE check your individual school websites for further information and instructional videos. The work that has been created by our school district is amazing. Our teachers and support staff are working around the clock to develop educational plans for our students. Normally, an online school is planned over the course of an entire school year. What LCSD has accomplished so far is nothing short of miraculous. I am so proud of everything our staff has accomplished and of their tireless commitment to our students.
