From Senator Jeff Merkley:
Congress needs to enact bold reforms to root out the rot in our government and restore the people’s voice. The Senate needs to follow in the House of Representatives’ steps and pass the For the People Act (HR1): the most sweeping anti-corruption measure passed by the House in nearly fifty years.
It’s been an entire year since the House took that critical vote, and since I led 46 of my colleagues in introducing this legislation in the Senate. But once again, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is putting the wish lists of America’s biggest corporations and wealthiest individuals ahead of the rights and needs of our communities, and has blocked this bill every day since.
Make no mistake. Our democracy is in crisis. Between major obstacles designed to make it harder for people to cast their ballots, and loopholes for lobbyists and foreign agents that flood our political system with massive sums of special interest money, the powerful and the privileged are drowning out the voices of working Americans. It’s up to us to take it back.
I’m going to keep putting the pressure on my colleagues in the Senate to pass the For the People Act. I hope you will join me in the fight for an America where every person, not just the powerful and the privileged, have an opportunity to thrive.
