Community Band Presents Annual Seasonal Concerts
The Pacific Coast Wind Ensemble will present its seventh annual Seasonal Celebration concert on December 14 at the Yachats Commons beginning at 2 PM. Proceeds from the concert will benefit South Lincoln Resources, as well as Yachats Food Pantry. The concert will be repeated Monday, Dec. 16, at the First Presbyterian Church of the Siuslaw in Florence, beginning at 7 PM, this concert to benefit Helping Hands.
The program will be in two parts: the first being made up of arrangements of Broadway show tunes, a rare Sousa march, a beguine for band, and several novelty numbers. The second half of the program will draw heavily on traditional holiday favorites, including a Welsh carol medley, a salute to Chanukah, Nesticos Christmas Joy, and several others. A addition to the program this year will be a performance by the Bands brass section: a Christmas Bell fantasy and a setting of Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.
The Bands conductor is Jerry Lees. Jerry comes to us from southern California, where he taught band, played in jazz combos, orchestras and pits for a number of years. He brings a wealth of experience and energy to the band.
Refreshments will be available at intermission, as well as baked items for sale to take home.
The concert is free but a donation of $5/ person and $10/family would be appreciated. Proceeds will go to South Lincoln County Resources, for the Yachats concert and Helping Hands for the Florence concert. Non-perishable food items will also be collected for the local food pantries.
The Pacific Coast Wind Ensemble is composed of about 35 professional and amateur musicians from the central Oregon coast, and has provided concert band entertainment for more than two decades. The band plays several concerts per year throughout the region: besides the Seasonal Celebration Concerts in Yachats and Florence, we will be performing at the Sea of Lights at the Oregon Coast Aquarium on Dec. 20. Spring concerts are planned for Florence and Yachats, plus appearances at Waldport Beachcomber Days and Waldport high school graduation.
If youd like to join the band, no audition is required; an instrument and ability to read music are required. Rehearsals are Monday nights during the school year, alternately in Waldport and Florence. Most of the members are adult, but high school students are welcome. As part of the Bands outreach program, we provide scholarships to local music students, mainly from Newport, Waldport and Siuslaw high schools. Persons interested in applying for a scholarship should contact the music teacher at their local school.
