1:15pm Newport Fire and the Coast Guard rescued a woman Monday afternoon who had ventured out onto the North Jetty – past the gate and the warning signs. She got caught on the rocks by large breaking waves and was injured. Newport Fire called the Coast Guard who were on scene pretty quickly, lowered a coastguardsman down and grabbed her and hauled her safety. From there she was taken to PCH for treatment of cuts and scrapes from a fall.
Newport Fire Chief Rob Murphy says gates and “Keep Out” signs are clear warnings that no one should proceed beyond them. Chief Murphy says jetties are for boats and ships and are not to be considered a play area for people. Lives have been lost on both the north and south jetties. In fact, on the south jetty rescuers spotted some folks way out where the breakers were shooting water high in the air. They were ordered back in to shore.
