LEARN HOW TO PLAY MAHJONG
MAHJONG 101

Mahjong is a tile game of both skill and luck that originated in China many centuries ago and was brought to the West in the 1920’s. Mahjong is played with four people seated around a table with 144 domino like pieces or tiles marked in suits, counters, and dice. The object being to build a winning combination of pieces. The first person to match a hand of 14 tiles and thus “call mahjong” ends the game.

Barbara Bush will be teaching the American version of this fun tile game. She will break the game down into its pieces and parts and then quickly put it all together in a gaming format. Plan to be playing by the third class!

Class will be held on Tuesdays, October 22 – November 12, 2019, from 10:00 am – 12:00 pm. Class size is limited to 8 participants, so register now! Class fee is $10.00. Pay online with your credit card!

Join the 2020 Census Team, be a census taker and get paid to help your community. The Newport 60+ Activity Center will be hosting a U.S. Census Bureau Recruitment Job Fair on Tuesday, October 22, 2019, 8:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

A census is the procedure of systematically acquiring and recording information about the members of a given population. Learn how you can help collect important data that will determine Oregon’s representation in Congress, as well as how funds are spent in your community on things like roads, schools and hospitals.

Job requirements include being at least 18 years old, have a valid Social Security number, must be a U.S. citizen, have a valid email address and be able to work flexible hours, including days, evenings and weekends. Most of the census jobs also require you to have access to a vehicle and have a valid driver’s license (unless public transportation is readily available) and have access to a computer with internet (to complete training).

If you are interested in playing a part in history and helping to ensure everyone in your community is counted, you don’t want to miss this important event.

MEDITATION WORKSHOP
Wednesday, October 23, 2019
11:15 am – 12:15 pm

Meditation is now mainstream and is being practiced in many different places in many different ways. The meditation that will be taught in this workshop has its roots in Zen practice. In our everyday lives we can see how complex life can be and how we need to have a place to relax and catch our breath sometimes. In this workshop, you will learn that this place of rest already exists in our own bodies. The most important point in this workshop is to learn how to simply sit, and be comfortable and restful – a practice and tool that can be applied to any life endeavor.

The instructor for this informative workshop is Joseph Armenio.

This workshop is free to members, and for everyone else there will be a $2.00 drop-in fee.

To register for this informative and fun workshop, go online: www.newportoregon.gov/sc and click on the dark blue banner “Browse the catalog and register.” There, you may view a listing of additional trips, hikes, classes, presentations and events.
