Update 7pm: A fire badly damaged the Gleneden Beach Christian Church at Alderwood and Gleneden Beach Loop Sunday afternoon. The fire appeared to have a head start as the flames were large and eventually came through roof. Firefighters from Depoe Bay, Lincoln City and Newport battled the blaze which wound up doing considerable damage. Fortunately no one was hurt. No cause yet officially determined. Fire investigators will be out Monday to try to track down the source of the fire.
1:52pm – Report of of a church building on fire at Alderwood and Gleneden Beach Loop. Watch for fire and emergency crews. A long ladder truck is being summoned from Lincoln City.
1:58pm – Heavy smoke is reported to be blowing out from under the building eaves.
2:00pm – Mutual Aid is also being provided by Newport Fire-Rescue.
2:02pm – Flames now making their way through the roof.
2:44pm – Fire Command is calling for additional backup – going in to “Defensive Mode.” That usually means the fire got too much of a head start on firefighters and they will now concentrate on protecting adjacent buildings and other properties while pouring a lot of water on the fire, but not going inside because of the fire had already consumed a big part of the building which can mean failing and falling walls and ceilings.
