Social Justice Poetry Slam on September 15th
Lincoln County Community Rights invites you to its first Social Justice Poetry Slam, an afternoon of original poetry on Sunday, September 15th, 3 – 5 PM, at the Newport Performing Arts Center, 777 W Olive St.
The name slam comes from how the audience has the power to interact with the poet and from the high-energy performance style of the performers. The afternoon will be full of poetry, spoken word and rap/hip-hop on a variety of social justice issues.
The poetry slam is a fundraiser for Lincoln County Community Rights (LCCR), the organization that authored Measure 177-221 which banned the aerial spray of pesticides from helicopters in Lincoln County in 2017.
LCCR understands the rights of local citizens are being eroded daily. We believe that local communities have the constitutional right to health and safety free from harms, be those environmental or social. And we believe that communities have the capacity and humanity to create their own resilient futures.
The slam creates a space for the unique voices throughout Lincoln County who have something passionate to say about their own lives and what they see. Poetry has the power to cross social boundaries, to remind us of our shared humanity, to build community. We believe Lincoln County’s voices are strong and need to be heard. Please come ready to whoop and holler, stamp your feet and clap your hands for the writers who will be taking the stage Sunday, September 15th.
The afternoon includes a silent auction, food and beverages from Yachats Brewing + Farm Store, and great music. The event is family friendly, and admission is free. Donations will be greatly appreciated. 5% of all proceeds will be donated to a local social justice organization. Come vote for your favorite!
