Well-known Portland musician Ellen Saunders joins Terry Filer on the Native American flutes, the Newport Drum Circle’s Chandler Davis, and the Thunder & Lightness World Beat Ensemble for the Season Finale of the Ninth Annual Nye Beach Summer Celebration this Saturday [September 14] from 12:00 to 3:00 p.m., rain or shine, on the big outdoor theater stage in the Courtyard at Café Mundo.
Ellen Saunders is facilitator of the Columbia River Flute Circle and leader of the professional Columbia River Flute Ensemble and teaches world flutes and guitar at her studio west of Portland. Songwriter, drummer and drum maker, and visual artist Terry Filer, from McMinnville, is the regular Thunder & Lightness flute player. She is an enrolled member of the Osage Nation, teaches flute and facilitates flute and drum circles in McMinnville, and performs frequently throughout Oregon both solo and with her own Sisters of the Osage flute ensemble.
Thunder & Lightness has been presenting high energy multicultural traditional and indigenous rhythm and song on traditional instruments in the Newport area for more than a decade. The all-ages community event, Saturday, is free and family friendly and the atmosphere has been likened to that of a big neighborhood block party. Dancing is encouraged and light percussion is available for those who want to join in (lightly) from the audience. There is ample outdoor seating (some covered) and indoor or outdoor menu service is available.
Café Mundo is at 209 NW Coast Street in the heart of Newport’s Historic Nye Beach district. Contact Davis directly about the music at 541-272-4615 or firstname.lastname@example.org; see www.cafemundo.us or call 541-574-8134 for menu information or reservations.
