As anyone who drives around Toledo can easily see, big things have been going on with the Port of Toledo over the past few years. The port has expanded from a small scale boat maintenance yard to rebuilding and enlarging some of the larger fishing vessels that ply the northwest Pacific Ocean. They bring in fish that adds millions of dollars in income for the community as well as expert service to small water craft used by Hatfield Marine Science Center and NOAA.
Between winning federal and state grants and a growing port workforce, the Port of Toledo, with Manager Bud Shoemake’s firm hands on the wheel, the port has shaken the senses of other port managers up and down the Oregon coast. One of those ports is the Port of Astoria, home to the Daily Astorian newspaper which just ran a story that clearly shows Shoemake’s imaginative leadership and keen eye on the future of the port industry along the Oregon Coast.
