The Newport 60+ Activity Center invites you to join us for a trip to one of the best Northwest celebrations, ongoing since 1961. This annual event celebrates Scandinavian heritage and presents the cultures of Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden.
There’s a lot to see and do at this festival, and everyone will find something to revel in. Actors and storytellers in colorful costumes weave through the crowd, delighting young and old. Regional and international folk dancers perform on stage throughout the day. Opportunities abound to see traditional crafts demonstrations, including Hardanger embroidery, bobbin lace and tatted lace. Watching what it takes to produce these things is a wonderful experience in this age of machine-manufactured goods.
And the food! The food booths offer such treats as meat loaf in sour cream pastry, pickled herring, sweet and sour cabbage, traditional pancakes and much much more. No, you will not go hungry!
The cost for this fun trip is only $17.00. We will depart from the 60+ Center in Newport on Thursday, August 8, 2019, at 8:00 am and return around 5:00 pm. To register, go online: www.newportoregon.gov/sc and click on the dark blue banner “Browse the catalog and register.” There, you may view a listing of additional trips, hikes, events, classes and presentations.
