The Highway 18 corridor hit by something – sparks from a vehicle or somebody deliberately setting fires
We happened to be driving by these fires as they were just starting. We saw 3 spread out from each other. The first one was on the other side of the fence then 2 more to the east. I’ve seen some reports that say the fire at the fence caused the others but there’s no way because these fires had just started. I don’t see how it could of jumped to the other 2 then to the 4th fire around the turn just past the seventh day church on Highway 18. I think it was arson. Just hoping since all were on the west bound lanes that Lincoln county stays safe from a possible arsonist. Firefighters pulled up and put the fires out very quickly.
Several fire departments quickly mobilized and got the fires out. The cause is under investigation.
The road closure was about one mile west of the intersection of Highway 18 and Highway 22 near the community of Valley Junction. Now that the fires are out fire investigators have a better likelihood of determining the cause – very likely human.
