Oregon Coastal Quilters Guild: Quilts by the Sea

Oregon Coastal Quilters Guild Presents “Quilts by the Sea” August 2 and 3

“Quilts by the Sea,” the annual quilt show presented by Oregon Coastal Quilters Guild (OCQG) will feature more than 300 quilts and special displays. The show will be Friday and Saturday, August 2 and 3, at the Newport Recreation Center, 225 SE Avery Street, Newport, Oregon. Entrance fee is $6 per day; hours of the show are 9-5 on Friday and 9-4 on Saturday.

Many of the quilts in the show will have been judged by an accredited judge, Elizabeth Spannring of LaCenter, Washington. Quilts by the Sea also will feature a vendor mall with many interesting and unique items for sale as well as a member boutique, children’s activity center, displays of guild activities, a treasure hunt for all ages, demonstrations of quilting products and techniques, and a lunchroom operated by a local 4-H group. Some of the quilt in the show will be for sale.

“Heading Home,” a queen-size quilt made by members of OCQG will be on view. Tickets for the raffle quilt will be available at the show; prices are six tickets for $5 or $1 for one ticket. (Winner need not be present to win.)

OCQG member Nan Scott of Yachats, Oregon will be the Featured Quilter at the show. Nan has previous served as president, quilt show co-chair, and many other positions in the guild. A selection of her quilts will be in a special display.

Special presentations of quilts to five local military veterans will occur during the show, along with a display of additional Quilts of Valor. Veterans to be honored are John Skelton, US Air Force; Paul Reed, US Army; Bob and Jane Heida, US Coast Guard; and Jim Stewart, US Navy. The 2019 guild challenge, “Patriotic Medallions,” will line the hallway leading to the show entrance.

A two-day silent auction of small quilts will be conducted; half the proceeds of the auction will be donated to Food Share of Lincoln County. “Threads of Life,” the 2019 quilt from Donate Life Northwest, will be a special display this year. Local connections include blocks made by Carroll and Grump E. Stratton, Patti Page, and Bee Smith. Guild members Twy Hoch, Rose Shaw, Heidi Ware and Elizabeth Wood also assisted in its creation.
