On Golden Pond: A Golden Treasure
Tony Award-winning play On Golden Pond glitters on stage at the Newport Performing Arts Center
Red Octopus Theatre Company is pleased to present Ernest Thompson’s classic, heartwarming comedic drama, On Golden Pond, live on stage July 19 – August 4 in the Alice Silverman Theatre at the Newport Performing Arts Center.
The play, directed by Barbara Berge, tells the love story of Ethel and Norman Thayer, who are returning to the beautiful tranquility of their summer home on Golden Pond for the forty-eighth year. But their peaceful solitude is interrupted when their daughter, her fiancé, and his teenage son pay a visit on Norman’s 80th birthday – changing all their lives in ways that are both moving and heartwarming.
“What I love about this play,” explains Berge, “is how it deals with age, regret, disappointment, love – both spoken and unspoken – and ultimately acceptance, forgiveness, and renewal in a way that is humorous, tender, and sweet. Most of all I love the humor and love that seeps into every scene.”
The play, which won three Tony Awards in its original Broadway run, is a perfect choice for summer and features a cast of both new and familiar faces, including Akia Woods as Ethel Thayer, John Farrell as Norman Thayer, Stacy Fischer as Chelsea Thayer Wayne, Scott Branchfield as Charlie Martin, Dean Seanor as Bill Ray, and Alexander Her as Billy Ray, Jr.
“It’s a wonderful cast,” said Berge, “and they bring this play to life with passion, humor, and tenderness. Audiences will laugh, cry, and walk out of the theatre uplifted.”
The production is stage managed by CJ McCarty with Bonnie Ross, Linda Haggerty, and Brian Haggerty running crew. Ron Miller provided lighting design, Tony Simon designed the sound, Bonnie Ross is prop mistress, and costuming is by Barbara Berge, Melissa MacDonald, and the cast members themselves. The set was designed by Shawn Brateng and built by Construction Lead Geoff Levear with help from Tony Simon, Jeff Lichtman, River Benson, Sherron Watson, Cory Watson, Bonnie Ross, Irene Woods, Lee Ritzman, and others. Show graphic and publicity was designed by Darcy Hogan.
