A fisherman 14 miles southwest of Newport, fell off his fishing boat early Thursday morning. He was not wearing a life vest but he did have a hand-held two-way radio on him.
The Coast Guard heard the man calling for help over the radio and immediately got a locator on him and roared off to rescue him. While enroute another fishing boat heard the conversation and motored over toward the man and his boat. The captain of the boat hoisted him aboard and took him over to his boat.
The man was pretty cold but told the arriving coastguardsmen that he was fit to take his boat back in. So the Coast Guard followed him the whole 14 miles back to port. Name of the man and his boat was not immediately available but it’s believed he’s from Newport.
