Summer is off with a bang in Newport! Summer has started off with a bang in Newport and the Ninth Annual summer-long Nye Beach Second Saturday Summer Celebration is already preparing for its second show of the season this weekend.
This year’s series of casual outdoor concerts launched on Saturday May 11 and continues, rain or shine, this Saturday (June 8) from Noon to 3:00 p.m. on the outdoor theater stage in the Courtyard at Café Mundo with multicultural traditional and indigenous World Beat music with the Thunder & Lightness Ensemble and Ocean Thunder Drummers featuring the Newport Community Drum Circle’s Chandler Davis, Donna Hill (West African drums), Sandra Surber (Middle Eastern and African rhythms), and special musical guests.
Scheduled special guests this month include popular drummer Rodney Turner and percussionist Skip Floraday, of Lincoln County’s Undrtow band, but don’t be startled if the stage suddenly fills up with surprise guests of all skill levels and musical orientations! (It’s not an open jam session, but they are always looking for unusual guests, Davis said, so long as they call him first to make arrangements!)
The all-community event – sponsored by the drum circle — has been described as part concert, part variety show, and part neighborhood block party.
It’s free and family friendly and all ages are welcome. There’s light percussion for those who want to join in (lightly). There’s plenty of outdoor and indoor seating and indoor and outdoor food and beverage service during the performances from the healthful and moderately priced Café Mundo menu (“World Beat Cuisine”).
Cafe Mundo is in the heart of the Historic Oceanfront Nye Beach district at 209 NW Coast Street. Contact Davis at 541-272-4615 or firstname.lastname@example.org for concert series information; call 541-574-8134 for menu information or reservations.
