I am writing to express my concern over the proposed ban on plastic shopping bags. Certainly, we are responsible as citizens to maintain our environment as much as possible. God has given us a beautiful world and, just as with all of His creation, we are stewards of His gift.
However, imposing a ban on bags used for carrying items to and from the store, is simply a reaction to the problem. Forcing people not to use a disposable grocery bag, will not keep all other kinds of plastic bags out of circulation. For example, will we next hear that we must bring our own bag to the store when we buy a loaf of bread? How about fresh produce? No more bags to keep the meat from dripping? The list goes on and on.
Our problem with plastic in the ocean stems from a general public lack of concern for anything but self, and can only be permanently solved by returning our collective gaze towards our Creator. People that serve Him, want to keep a good relationship with God and man. We teach our children not to litter and will even pick up other people’s trash and throw it away, simply because we want to honor God. That attitude will keep trash in the proper place. Otherwise, we can continue to ban plastic in all forms, but it never will solve the problem.
