A series of sneaker waves man-handled several beach walkers in Lincoln City this afternoon. An elderly couple and a woman and her daughter were knocked off their feet at the D-River Wayside and were trapped in the swirling sneaker waves. They got tossed around pretty violently according to witnesses.
North Lincoln Fire-Rescue raced to the scene and tended to the victims. Fire-Rescue workers says you can’t predict moment to moment if a big wave will rise up and clobber you. They say if the sea is pretty active it’s best to walk along the beach with enough distance between you and the water that you’ve got time to run away. Sneaker waves can rise up quickly, knock down anything standing and then suck them out into the surf. And it can happen in mere seconds.
So, keep a healthy distance and never take your eyes off the ocean. And as they say…never turn your back on it.
Heavy surf along the Central Coast is forecasted to last through tomorrow morning.
