A grey whale entangled in crab pot line was spotted about 4 miles offshore Depoe Bay during a whale watching trip by charter vessel Sunrise. The whale appeared to be anchored by the gear and apparently had line through its mouth and across the head and a wrap on the body.
The vessel wasn’t able to stay with the whale and when the Coast Guard went out about three hours later the whale wasn’t there – so the disentanglement crew had to head back to port. Unfortunately pictures weren’t taken to document the whale or the entanglement.
PLEASE boaters and whale watchers keep your eyes open and call 877-767-9425 immediately if you see the whale. You can hail the Coast Guard on Channel 16.
Please take pictures of the whale and the entangling gear.
