There is a reason that we elect our City Council. We entrust in them to educate themselves around issues that effect us and our environment. They make many decisions without putting them to a vote of the people like speed limit restrictions, funding for essential services or most recently the ban on pan-handling on street corners. The ban on single use plastic bags is just such a decision. This is because when it comes to the concerns and well-being of our environment we look to our informed city fathers and mothers to make the right decision and act in behalf of the greater good.
We are then called upon to begin to change our habits and find environmentally sound alternatives to carrying and keeping our groceries dry. There are many alternatives to keeping our groceries dry but there is no alternative but to stop the use of single use plastic bags in order to protect our environment, marine life and recycling machinery.
As the 5th grade students ended their impassioned plea to the city council, “I want to stop this pollution, don’t you?” Indeed we do!
