U.S. Government shut down is lifted: Federal worker checks are on the way

Pres. Donald Trump
Re-opens the government for the next 20 days.

President Trump finally gave in to the a growing chorus of Democrats and Republicans to stop punishing the American people, and federal workers especially, for his dispute over how to better secure the country’s southern boundary with Mexico.

Trump said the partial federal government shutdown is lifted and will remain lifted until February 15th at which point Trump will re-assess the situation.

Reports say that Trump had been watching very recent voter polls that showed support for the shut down is dropping, and dropping fast – even among his most fervent supporters.

Democrats especially have urged the President to consider more effective border patrol tactics that don’t involve a very expensive wall, that can be climbed over or tunneled under. Drones, radar, lidar, micro-seismographs and other technologies, they claim, can track illegal aliens from great distances from the border so they can be intercepted and either arrested or turned back. They also contend that over-stayed visas constitute the primary method of illegal immigration – not walking across the border. In fact illegal entry to the U.S. is more common by boarding airliners than by walking across the desert.

Sen. Ron Wyden
D-Oregon

Comment by Oregon U.S. Senator Ron Wyden
“The hostage-taking is over for now, but with great pain inflicted on our country. I am deeply grateful to all of our federal workers who provided essential services while unpaid. I will keep fighting to make sure their families and our communities never suffer like this again.”

Ending the Trump Shutdown means relief for the thousands of federal workers who are struggling to put food on the table, and the taxpayers who rely on the vital work they do. Wasting $5 billion on a border wall is a bad idea today, and will be a bad idea three weeks from now (when the Shutdown might be re-activated).

Sen. Jeff Merkley
D-Oregon
…on the lifting of the shut down….

Oregon’s Senator Jeff Merkley released the following statement after the Senate passed a clean bill to end the shutdown and reopen the government through February 15:

“The Senate has done its job and passed bipartisan legislation to end this senseless shutdown. President Trump can’t undo the damage he has done to countless Americans as a result of his temper tantrum shutdown. At the very least, he must uphold his end of the bargain and sign this bill so that federal workers can get back to work and thousands of American families receive backpay before this economic hole gets even deeper.
