A California female has been freed from her alleged abductor in Newport. A Newport police officer pulled their car over for a traffic violation. Moments later the male passenger suddenly got out of the car and walked away. Without a reason to stop him, the officers continued to talk with the female driver.
It wasn’t long after that officers learned the driver had been abducted in California and had suffered rape, sodomy, strangulation, physical assault, kidnapping and being forced to take an illegal drug. And that the man who got out of car was the perpetrator.
As it turned out, the male was well known to the driver and within a short time was located in Toledo where he was arrested, with the assistance of a persistent police dog. The suspect was identified as Lawson Rankin, 35. Rankin is being held at the Lincoln County Jail on a “No Bail” hold. Name and the age of the victim was not immediately released.
