Letter to the Editor.
Presented at Board of Commissioners meeting held on November 21, 2018
My name is Penelope Kaczmarek, address: 111 Fred Taylor Rd. Siletz, OR 97380. Thank you for your service to our county. I appear before you this morning as a member of the coalition Common Sense-Lincoln County (CS-LC) and speak on its behalf. Our goal is to preserve the Lincoln County voters’ right to have a say in considering the best, most humane, and responsible use for the old Fairgrounds site in Newport.
While county citizens have, through the voting process, indicated our wish to dedicate some of our tax money for the continuation of a Lincoln County Fair, we have not yet had the opportunity to express our wishes through a vote regarding what to do with the old Fairgrounds site. I wish to remind you now that in conjunction with a past Lincoln County School Board, the City of Newport, and the Fair Board, a former Board of Lincoln County Commissioners unanimously agreed with CS-LC’s present position that the old Fairgrounds is no longer a good and viable location for hosting activities such as fairs.
Well in advance of the recent November election, I appeared before you on behalf of our coalition (in June 2018) to request that you please exercise your power and refer this important matter back the Lincoln County citizens as a ballot measure, permitting the people a say. I asked for the courtesy of your reply within two weeks as to whether or not you would consider our request. None was issued.
I’m here today to ask again, are the Commissioners willing to refer this matter back to Lincoln County citizens for a vote, as a ballot measure in the May 2019 elections. Yes or no?
If you’re unable to provide us your answer at this time, we request the courtesy of your answer within one week’s time, giving CommonSense-LincolnCounty the information that will inform our next steps.
