It’s Bella Italia this weekend as the Newport Symphony Orchestra at the Ocean presents their concert with an Italian flavor Saturday at 7:30pm and Sunday at 2:00pm at the Newport Performing Arts Center. Under the direction of Maestro Adam Flatt the program opens with Franz Schubert’s “Overture in C, ‘In the Italian Style’”. Schubert’s concert overtures are vibrant, youthful works, composed during the years 1811 to 1819, when the master was in his teens and early twenties. Also include in the program is Maurice Ravel’s “Le Tombeau de Couperin.”

Johann Hertel’s “Trumpet Concerto no. 3 in D Major” will feature soloist Katherine Evans. Originally from Boston, Katherine is the principal trumpet of the Newport Symphony Orchestra and has held principal trumpet positions in several New England orchestras. She has been a soloist with the Brockton and Waltham, MA Symphony Orchestras, the Harvard-Radcliffe Bach Society Orchestra and Harvard-Radcliffe Baroque Orchestra. She holds an M.M. in trumpet performance from the Longy School of Music and a B.A. in English and Music from Harvard University. Ms. Evans will also be the soloist for the performance of Alan Hovhaness’ “Prayer of Saint Gregory for Trumpet and Strings.”

Concluding the concert will be Felix Mendelssohn’s “Symphony no. 4 ‘The Italian’”. The work has its origins (as had the composer’s Scottish 3rd Symphony and The Hebrides overture) in the tour of Europe which occupied Mendelssohn from 1829 to 1831. Its inspiration is the colour and atmosphere of Italy.

Performances are this Saturday at 7:30p.m. with a pre-concert talk by Conductor Adam Flatt at 6:45p.m. Sunday’s performance commences at 2:00p.m. Following each concert will again feature a special complimentary Wine Down featuring select wines from the Flying Dutchman Winery of Otter Rock plus delicious array of food items. Stay and mingle with Adam, our guests artist and our orchestra members!

Tickets, $25 and $39 (plus fees) and $10 for students are on sale at the Performing Arts Center box office, by calling 541-265-2787 or online at NewportSymphony.org. The Center is located at 777 West Olive in Newport.
