For a long time now i have consciously avoided a deep immersion into the science and politics of climate change. I have protected my heart from feeling the fear, sadness and hopelessness of living in a world that very well might change beyond recognition.
This week that has changed dramatically for me. I have woken up to the very real threat of global annihilation. It was because I spoke with an old friend whose passion is for fishing. For many many years he and his friends have fished the coastal rivers with great bounties of Steelhead and Salmon. This year he has caught NOTHING and neither have his friends. He tells me that the fishing season is now closed because of an attempt to protect the few remaining fish enabling them to spawn. He grieves the loss of his beloved pastime and even more he grieves the loss of fish in our rivers.
This is so close to home that I cannot deny nor push away the fact that our fish and rivers are dying. I am also letting in the gross degradation of our environment which has brought on climate change. The signs are all around us!
And I am asking where is the will of we the people and of our Government to take charge and do whatever is humanly possible to save us from an inevitable course of self-destruction? Pretending that it is not happening is no longer an option for me and I hope for the rest of my fellow citizens also. The question remains what can an individual do? A good place to begin would be to join one of many environmental groups in Lincoln County like 350oregoncentralcoast.
