Rachel Barton Presents Free Poetry Workshop
Looking for poetic inspiration? Corvallis poet Rachel Barton will get poets and non-poets writing at the Nov. 18 meeting of Willamette Writers Coast Chapter. The free workshop takes place from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Newport Public Library.
Barton will use the poems of accomplished poets to discuss structure, form, topic, tone, diction, premise, and other elements that speak to the reader and offer prompts for the participants to write their own poems. “All prompts are subject to subversion!” Barton says.
Handouts will be provided. Bring pen and paper. Expect to write on the spot, to share your very early drafts in small groups, and to take home the starts of three to four poems.
Barton is a poet, writing coach, and member of the Calyx Editorial Collective. She is founding editor of Willawaw Journal, an online journal for poetry and art. She also co-chairs Willamette Writers on the River (Corvallis). Her poems have been published in Oregon English, Hubbub, Whale Road Review, Cloudbank, Mom’s Egg Review, and elsewhere. Her chapbook, Out of the Woods, was released in 2017. Her latest collection, Happiness Comes, has just been released from Dancing Girl Press.
