“10 X 10” Exhibition Celebrates a Decade of the Nye Beach Banner Project
First Friday opening reception scheduled for Nov. 2, 5-7pm, at the Newport Visual Arts Center
The Oregon Coast Council for the Arts presents “10 X 10: A Decade of the Nye Beach Banner Project” from November 2-24 in the Upstairs Gallery at the Newport Visual Arts Center. The exhibition marks an important milestone for one of Newport’s most creative community arts projects and is scheduled to coincide with the annual Nye Beach Banner Auction each November.
Ten banners, one each from ten artists, will reflect the contributions of over 146 artists who have been involved with the project since its inception in 2008. A First Friday opening reception will be held at the VAC on November 2, 5-7pm, with a brief gallery presentation at 6:15pm.
Artwork from the following artists will be included in the “10 X 10” exhibition: Robin Beckwith, Linda Briggs, Graece Gabriel, Eileen Hearne, Julie Lamberson, Luke Lamont, Jennifer Larsen, Amy Pattison, Anita Tanner and Frances Van Wert. Other banners will hang in memory of Rick Bartow, Lynn Bishop, Chad Buckingham and Andrew Rodman.
The Nye Beach Banner Project is a program of the Nye Beach Merchants Association. The project encourages area artists to paint depictions and themes related to the region onto double-sided canvas banners, which are then hung on light posts throughout the neighborhood from spring to fall. The project brings creative works to the streets of the historic neighborhood district.
In November of each year, the banners are sold at auction, with proceeds funding youth arts programs through OCCA at the Newport Visual Arts Center. All work is donated by the participating artists.
“We encourage all Nye Beach banner artists to attend and to be recognized during the November 2 opening at the VAC,” says Willemin.
The Upstairs Gallery is open Tuesday-Saturday, noon – 4pm.
