October 12, 1962: Today marks the 56th anniversary of the Columbus Day Storm, which brought wind speeds over 150 mph to Oregon, Washington and Northern California. The extratropical cyclone was one of the strongest ever recorded; it killed 46 people, caused $2-billion dollars in damage (today’s dollars), and blew down 12-billion board feet of timber.
