Samaritan House fundraiser returns to PAC for 2nd annual event
They have been practicing for months and on Friday, Nov. 2, seven local couples will put their dance moves and their nerves of steel on display at the second annual “Dancing with the Coastal Stars.” At stake are bragging rights and a mirror-ball trophy for the winners, who will take over stage at this benefit for Samaritan House Family Shelter.
Tickets are now on sale for the event, which includes more than just a show. While dancers and their coaches are backstage preparing, the lobby of the Newport Performing Arts Center will be the venue for a light reception for attendees at 6:30pm, with hors d’oeuvres and beverages before the curtain rises at 7:30pm.
With the help of local dance instructors, each couple will perform a uniquely-choreographed routine with the dance style and song of their choosing. Attendees should expect some surprises, some laughs, and a fun evening for a great cause. They should also plan to pay close attention because each paid admission will receive one vote toward a special award.
Angela Nebel and Evelyn Brookhyser, two members of the Samaritan House Board of Directors, lead the committee planning the affair with the help of Executive Director Lola Jones.
“After seeing the success of last year’s event and witnessing the commitment of our seven couples and their coaches this year, I know we are in for a great show,” Nebel said. “These people committed countless hours this summer to learning their choreography and have said they are willing to dance on stage, with takes the spirit of volunteerism to a whole new level.”
The audience may be surprised to see their dentist, their financial planner, a commercial fisherman, and many other unexpected community members on the stage. Dancing for a good cause are these dynamic duos:
· Doug and Tracy Chadwick
· Jonny and Michelle Law
· Lesley Ogden and William Arens
· Birgitte Ryslinge and Robin Gintner
· Chris and Julia Carlson
· Charlie Plybon and Cristen Don
· Rob and Melissa MacDonald
In addition to the dancers, a talented batch of dance instructors and three local rehearsal venues are critical to the success of the event. Volunteering their skills as instructors and choreographers are Bonnie Prater, Akia Woods, Wendy Weimer, Gidget Manucci Ashley, Ellen Mathewson, Helyn Layton, Nora Sherwood, Jody Hanna, Jori Wilson, and Rafael. Rehearsals have occurred primarily at Dance and All that Jazz studio, Oregon Coast Community College, and South Beach Community Center.
Dancing with the Coastal Stars is sponsored by Abel Insurance Agency, Martek Real Estate, and Columbia Bank.
