Transportation experts and local government officials are meeting today to dream, and dream big – as well as fast.
Government officials are dreaming out-loud on the prospect of building a 250 mph mag-lev bullet train between Portland, through Seattle and all the way to Vancouver BC. Travel times from Portland would be 45 minutes to Seattle, and just under two hours to Vancouver, stopping at 7 stations along the way.
The nearly $25 to $40 Billion project would be quite an economic engine and job creating service if and when it’s built. When it might be up and running is anyone’s guess but some say it could be operating in 15 or so years.
The ‘bullet train’ would likely be a public-private partnership that would help blend and help super-charge the economies of Portland, Seattle and Vancouver BC. Tourism especially for visitors to the Pacific Northwest who’d rather take the train than fly. Cheaper too, we suspect.
Another advantage would be easing freeway overcrowding caused by growth in this part of the country.
Talks have begun on planning such a mega-transit service. But again, we’re probably at least 15 years out from the first shout-out “Allll A-Board!” is heard.
