Newport officials are making another run at getting scheduled airline service to Newport – serving an area from Tillaook to Florence and Newport to the Toledo turnoff on Highway 20.
As many readers may remember another small airline company ran scheduled airline service to Portland, but it didn’t pan out financially for them – and so when the state subsidies ran out, they ran out too.
Critics at the time partially blamed he the airline for using overly expensive aircraft.
But it may be a new day. Another airline company has expressed an interest in providing scheduled flights to and from Newport – a company that specializes in short distance travel. Newport to Portland would fit right in to their “short-hoop” service menu as revealed on their website.
The Newport City Council will begin discussions October 9th on this renewed opportunity for scheduled air service to the Central Coast.
As before, it’ll be about promoting the service so everyone knows that the service exists. There are many, many Central Coast business people who drive to Eugene or to Portland to catch a flight to business meetings. Avoiding extra travel on the ground and wear and tear on their vehicles would likely be enough to convince travelers to use the airline service.
We’ll see how these preliminary discussions go. One encouraging aspect of the company is that they use smaller twin engine aircraft to fly in and out of smaller towns which means far lower flight costs for the airline.
