Celebrate Public Lands Day at Cape Perpetua, south of Yachats!

Cape Perpetua

Special events scheduled for final weekends of September at Cape Perpetua

A special schedule of events will take place at Cape Perpetua over the final weekends of September and in conjunction with the annual National Public Lands Day.

Celebrated on September 22nd, public lands day brings together volunteers, agencies, and partner organizations to connect people to public lands in their community, inspire environmental stewardship, and encourage use of public lands for education, recreation, and general health. To encourage people to visit their public lands, the Forest Service is waiving day-use fees at recreation sites across the Pacific Northwest.

The focus of National Public Lands Day 2018 is resilience and restoration. Events featured at the Cape Perpetua Visitor Center on September 22nd include:
· BioBlitz (11:00am-1:00pm), BioBlitz participants will meet at the Cape Perpetua Visitor Center before embarking on group guided hikes. These hikes will take guests up into the old growth forest and down to the intertidal areas of the Cape.
· Presentation by Janet Essley (1:00pm), A former artist in residence for Cape Perpetua will be giving a presentation examining a new perspective on migrating shorebirds through Cultural Cartography of the annual migration of Red Knots.
· Presentation by Jim Nechols (3:00pm), An insect biologist and retired professor will present “Insect Defense Mechanisms” exploring how insects defend themselves against larger and stronger predators in several creative and effective ways.

The celebration of public lands continues the following week with Agents of Discovery kick-off on September 29th from 11:00am to 3:00pm. Agents of Discovery is a reality adventure using a mobile app to send participants on mission to explore a “Healthy Forest” along the popular Discovery Loop Trail. The app will guide to points along the trail where participants can make observations, inventory species and complete challenges. A smart phone is needed to download the app and Wi-Fi is available at the visitor center. Agents of Discovery is one of six events national-wide to be selected as a Signature Site for NPLD in 2018.

Fees will be waived at day-use recreation sites on Saturday, September 22nd only. This fee waiver includes many picnic areas, boat launches, trailheads, and visitor centers. Fees for camping, cabin rentals, heritage expeditions, or other permits still apply.
