The Oregon Music Teachers Association Lincoln County District will host a benefit concert on Sunday, September 23rd at 2 p.m. at the Newport Performing Arts Center. Admission is by donation to the Suzanne Brown Student Aid Fund. Refreshments with the performers will follow the concert.
This fall Spotlight on the Teachers will present music from the 1600’s through the 20th Century. The days program includes works from the greatest composers to the lesser known. “The concert will include a delightful trio by Alec Rowley, a Late Romantic composer, with four short selections performed by Kathy Follett, violin, Walt Hogsett, cello, and Mary Lee Scoville, piano. Follett and Scoville will appear later in the program with vocalist Christine McKenny who will sing Song by Leonard Bernstein one of the 20th Century greats,” says Jessica Treon, OMTA member. “We are extremely pleased to have these two talented members of the Newport Symphony Orchestra joining us on stage this year.”
More beautiful music from the Romantic period will be performed on piano. One of Dvorak’s famous Slavonic Dances for one piano, four hands will be played by Cathy Champion-Predmore and Diane LaRue. Jessica Treon will play a Brahms Intermezzo, and the team of Scoville and Treon will perform a two-piano arrangement of Richard Strauss’s Serenade for voice and piano. Champion-Predmore will perform Debussy’s Pagodas on solo piano. Rita Warton will perform A La Francaise by Canadian composer Remi Bouchard and will also accompany Doreen Thorusen, who will perform a violin piece by Polish composer, E. Mlynarske.
Warton can always be counted on for lighter fare in her unique soprano voice. She has chosen two humorous songs. One is by Tom Lehrer and the second by Flanders & Swann. Her accompanist will be Andrea Roesel. Tonia Storm will add variety with an aria from the 1600’s and a song from the catalog of Gilbert & Sullivan. She will be accompanied by Scoville.
Another 20th Century great, Bela Bartok, is also on the program. Champion-Predmore and Scoville will perform Ostinato from Mikrokosmos on two pianos. And finally, “There must always be a piano quartet in our Spotlight Concert,” says Scoville.“ This year’s quartet is Scoville, Treon, Roesel, and Warton. Two from the north and two from the south. We chose a 20th Century piece by Ingolf Dahl, Quodlibet. It is a rambunctious romp through a crazy quilt of American Fiddle Tunes.
You don’t want to miss it! Be sure to join us for a concert of beautiful music and support our local students with your donation.”
